The only original part of Susan Preston, author’s Aorta is the arch.
The rest is there, but it does not take the blood from my heart to the rest of my body. A rather complex, custom designed graft/stent contains the blood flow.
Catching a cold from my grandson in Scotland probably saved my life.
Long after I came home a persistent cough remained, and my husband insisted I tell the doctor. He ordered an X-Ray, and the radiographer sent me back to the doctor. She had noticed a second Aortic Aneurysm.
The red areas are the ballooned aorta – the surgeon’s explanation.
From the aorta other arteries feed off taking blood to other, essential parts of the body.
The graft would be long, and the ‘spaces’ for the small stents into those arteries had to be lined up perfectly.
After many appointments, and detailed warnings of the dangers, Dr Brendan Stanley agreed to undertake the difficult procedure.
This man and a skilled team at Fremantle Hospital inserted the graft into my aorta.
No longer am I the ‘walking time-bomb’ that another surgeon called me.
